A gutter starts dripping at the corner. A section along the back of the house sags a little more after every storm. A downspout comes loose. At some point every homeowner asks the same question: can this be fixed, or is it time for new gutters?

The honest answer depends on what’s wrong, how much of the system it affects, and what’s behind the gutter. Here’s how to tell the difference, so you don’t pay to replace gutters that only needed a repair, or keep patching a system that’s already done.

Signs a repair is probably enough

Gutter repair usually makes sense when the problem is limited and the rest of the system is in good shape:

  • One leaking corner or end cap. Drips at a single joint can often be resealed or the corner replaced.
  • One sagging section. If a run is pulling away because a few hangers have loosened or failed, re-securing it can fix the problem, as long as the fascia behind it is solid.
  • A loose or detached downspout. Downspouts knocked loose by wind or a ladder can usually be reattached or replaced on their own.
  • A bent section from a branch or storm. If the rest of the run is straight and sound, the damaged piece can often be repaired or replaced.
  • Overflow from a clog. Sometimes the gutter is fine. It’s just full of pine needles and debris. Clearing it, and adding gutter guards, may be all it needs.

Signs it’s time to replace your gutters

Replacement is usually the smarter long-term move when problems are widespread or keep coming back:

  • Leaks at many seams. Sectional gutters are joined every few feet, and every joint is a place to leak. Once several of them start failing, patching becomes a never-ending job.
  • Sagging along multiple runs. If gutters are pulling away in several places, the problem is usually bigger than a few hangers.
  • Dents, cracks or rust spots throughout. Damage spread across the whole system means the gutters have reached the end of their life.
  • Overflow in ordinary rain. Gutters that spill over even when they’re clean are often undersized for your roof. Many older homes have 5-inch gutters that can’t keep up with Florida downpours.
  • Standing water that never drains. Gutters that hold water after the rain stops may have lost their pitch.
  • Age plus problems. If your gutters are around 20 years old and showing dents, leaks or sagging, replacement is usually the better investment.

Look behind the gutter, too

A gutter is only as strong as the fascia board it hangs on. If a gutter keeps pulling away no matter how often it’s re-secured, the problem may be soft or rotted fascia, not the gutter itself. Watch for:

  • Peeling or bubbling paint along the roof edge
  • Soft spots when you press on the fascia
  • Water stains below the gutter line

In that case, the fascia needs to be repaired or replaced before any gutter work will last. Learn more about the signs of soffit and fascia damage.

If you replace, here’s what to look for

If replacement is the right call, make it count:

  • Seamless gutters. Formed on site from a single piece of aluminum for each run, so there are no seams along the length to leak.
  • The right size. We install 6-inch K-style gutters as standard because they move more water than 5-inch gutters, and 7-inch gutters for large or steep roofs.
  • Secure attachment. Hidden hangers along the gutter and downspouts fastened with hidden clips and hurricane anchors.
  • A finish that lasts. Baked-on enamel that never needs painting.

After a storm

Storm damage is one of the most common reasons homeowners face this question. Bent sections, torn hangers and detached downspouts can often be repaired, but if the storm hit gutters that were already failing, replacement may make more sense. Either way, photograph the damage before anything is moved. Our estimates are written and itemized, so you can include them with an insurance claim. Getting ready for the next one? Frequently Asked Questions – Zeus Gutters

Simply reach out to our team and tell us what you need. We can usually arrive at your location within one business day.

Can sagging gutters be repaired?

Often, yes. If a section sags because a few hangers have failed and the fascia behind it is solid, re-securing it usually fixes the problem. If the fascia is rotted, it needs to be addressed first. Keep in mind, repairs do not qualify for our lifetime warranty.

Is it worth repairing sectional gutters?

At Zeus Gutters, we alway recommend replacing sectional gutters with seamless ones, and our most common option is our seamless 6″ K-style gutter. For more info – Seamless Gutter Installation

How does the billing process work?

To secure your booking, we request a 50% down payment with the remaining 50% to be paid 24 hours prior to your event.

How do I know if my gutters are too small?

If clean gutters still overflow during normal rain, they’re likely undersized for your roof. Upgrading from 5-inch to 6-inch gutters is a common fix in Florida.

Will you tell me if I only need a repair?

Yes. Every estimate starts with an in-person inspection, and we’ll tell you honestly whether a repair will hold or replacement makes more sense. Please note that our minimum order requirement is $395.
